Helene Marks's Letter

To my lovely grandchildren,

Dear Daisy, Syd and Tommy,
When Grandad and I cycled through the park this morning. the sky was a bright, piercing blue. Shafts of sunlight shone down through the trees, the light catching the leaves as they floated down to the multi-coloured carpet below, Ours is a beautiful world, and autumn is the most beautiful time of year.
When I was your age, the world was a wonderful place. The seasons came and went, and we knew what to expect from the weather, even if it was often cold and wet!
As children, although we lived in the city, we found patches of rough ground where we could play. These places were alive with life. Flowers such as daisies, buttercups, coltsfoot ad clover grew in profusion. The air was alive with ladybirds, butterflies and bees, and tiddlers and sticklebacks swam in the tiny streams.
When you parents were your age, there were changes happening. There were fewer wildflowers, insects, and birds. Pollution was damaging the natural world. The weather was wilder - more storms, floods and fires. Habitats were being lost as forests were chopped down to make way for farming.
Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace and other environmental groups have been working to raise awareness of what is happening and to put pressure on businesses and governments,
but change has not been happening quickly enough, and that's where you come in. We need the help of you and your generation to continue the work. This is your world. Care for it, protect it, love it, as we have tried to do.
